Three documents have recently been published based on experiences in the Development of a Biofuel Value Chain in an African Palm Plantation project, jointly implemented between October 2007 and March 2009 by SNV, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the company Palmas Aceiteras de Honduras (HONDUPALMA).
As part of an agreement between SNV and the UNWTO (the UN's tourism agency), proposals for joint projects have been submitted to the Millennium Development Goals Fund. ‘Inclusive creative industries: an innovative tool for alleviating poverty in Peru’ was one of 10 proposals selected worldwide. The project will consolidate productive clusters based on handicrafts and tourism in three areas of Peru with high poverty indices.
SNV and a leading national drugstore chain in Bolivia have made an Inclusive Business Agreement to develop a new concept of drugstores catering specifically for low-income communities and dubbed ‘Bargain Drugstores’. Mutual benefit is guaranteed both for consumers, who have sustainable access to quality health products at affordable prices, and for the company, which will have access to a sizeable, new customer segment.
Working with the Base of the Pyramid as distributors and/or consumers can be of huge benefit for companies interested in accessing new markets. SNV’s Inclusive Business model can be understood as providing the following benefits:
— For the anchor company, the benefits stem from innovative access to a new market segment at competitive prices, enabling the company to increase its sales. Moreover, the company will enhance its presence and brand perception in segments in which it has not traditionally operated.
— For the members of the Base of the Pyramid - generally defined as members of low-income communities earning less than USD 3,300 per annum - the benefit lies in access to goods and services which it traditionally could not obtain.
